Digital Signage Newsletter February 2010

Dear Friends & Partners:

We are already in the middle of 2010 and I hope and assume that 2010 have had a more relaxed start for you than 2009.

Our start in the year 2010 has been as positive as the business year 2009 ended. Besides your trust in our performance shown with your orders, our innovative products and concepts are furthermore generating new significant business also. Just before Christmas we won one of the largest orders in the last years versus global competition: 11,000 x 15” digital posters for the shops of a major worldwide brand in entertainment markets.

We will all be furthermore confronted by difficult situations in this year 2010: tough competition of Asian competitors, currency fluctuations between Euro, Dollar and Yen, the dangerous level of public debt in our western countries and the total outage of our governments at the Copenhagen climate summit.

Later we will have to answer our children and grandchildren why we kept our habits and life styles at the cost of their future.

We as the Data Display Group with all our European and US employees are not perfect, but we try every day to make it a little bit better. Over the years we have taken many steps to be respectful of our natural environment, for our fellow man and the next generation. Green IT, resource management and the elimination of printed data sheets, catalogs or already 80% of our invoices are just a few of the steps taken to date. We also fulfill our social responsibility by paying our taxes locally.

My personal opinion concerning the business year 2010 is as follows. Who missed out on basic renewal in 2008/9 will be faced with problems to recover. Whoever is able to convert ideas directly in customer benefits will be the winner. Our customers are willing to pay a better price for real innovations & benefits, but real innovation means a significant advantage in comparison with the former product. In the following economic period these companies will come out on top, which have the better products, the more intelligent business processes and the most satisfied customers.

A long and interesting 2010 is waiting for our activities. Let us closely work together!

Yours,

Bernhard Staller

Founder & President of the Data Display Group

Managing Director of Distec GmbH

New Samsung 43“ Bar-type Display

At the end of last year we already presented the LTI430LA01 which will be introduced to the market now. The LTI430LA01 is a so called bar-type Display with a diameter of 43“, a resolution of 1920 x 480 and a length/height ratio of 4:1.

Due to its Super-PVA technology it features an all-around viewing angle of 178° (horizontally and vertically). A typ. contrast value of 3000:1, a brightness value of 700 cd/m² and a fast response time of 8 msec makes it a perfect solution for digital signage- and advertising applications. Target markets for example are "Overhead-Displays“ above sales counters in fast food restaurants, but also areas like facility management.

For more information please click here. Samples will be available from March on, larger quantities from the end of Q2/2010 on. For further questions please contact our sales team.

Additional version of Samsung 52” DID-panel

What means DID? It is the abbreviation for Digital Information Display, Samsung’s leading TFT technology for professional use, which is different to typical TV panels (which are specified for 8 hours/day use only).

The LTI520HB02 (diagonal size: 52"; resolution: 1920x1080) is a new version of the business-DID family for applications like multimedia-, video- or Digital Signage.

The 500 nits LTI520HB02 has a lower brightness than the P-DID LTI520HB01 with 700 nits. The mechanical construction is based on a larger bezel. Despite the bigger size this TFT is trimmed on power efficiency and the weight is only 19 kg.

According to our philosophy this display will also be available as a plug&play-solution based on our controller platforms, e.g. our HDMI(HDCP) /VGA/DVI/Video/3G-SDI–converter board Prisma III.

New Samsung 55“ P-DID Panel LTI550

In the middle of Q2/2010 we will start supplying samples of the new 55“ DID-Panel LTI550HF-02 with a Full HD resolution (1920x1080; 60 Hz). Just like the other members of the P-DID family the LTI550 also features a brightness of 700 cd/m², a typical contrast ratio of 3000:1 and a fast response time for an excellent video performance.

An important issue for the design-in is having a matching solution for the panel’s special Power-on-Sequencing. Easier and as always reliable is the design-in with our RGB/DVI/Video-Kit LTI550HF-02/Prisma II.

You will find more information on our website.

LED-backlighted 15" displays with 950 resp. 850 cd/m² brightness

Also new in our product range are two 15“ displays, which are produced in our US- location Ronkonkoma, N.Y. Both displays, which are based on the industrial G-series of CMO, are upgraded with a LED-backlight (half-value period: 50k hours) and/or with an AR-front/transflective film in our local clean room.

The G150X1-L02-V444G is a transflective 15" TFT-Display with an LED-backlight and AR-frontpolariser. With its very high brightness value of 950 cd/m² it is a perfect platform for e.g. applications in the multimedia and advertising sector. Due to the wide working temperature Top -30..70°C it can be used in outdoor applications without the need of a special, expensive temperature management. The additional transflective upgrade improves the readability in direct sunshine. The optimized viewing direction for this display is 6:00. For more information concerning this panel please click here.

The G150X1-L03-V508B is a transmissive 15" TFT-Display with a LED-backlight and a special AR-front for optimized sunshine readability. For this version the brightness is specified at 850 cd/m² and the operating temperature is specified at -30..80°C. The optimized viewing direction is 12:00. For more information concerning this panel please click here.

Both panels have an XGA resolution (1024 x 768 pixels) and a good viewing angle of 160° (horizontally and vertically).

Different with CCFL backlight units, the LED backlight can be driven without the typical high voltage and high frequency. This makes the approval of EMI tests a lot easier. For the LED backlight/rails we are offering our own, perfectly adjusted LED-converter CCBR (up to 800 mA).

Digital Picture Player - LAN-controller ArtistaNET III

In order to supply state-of-the-art technology in non-PC LAN-controllers, we have developed the "big brother" of our very successful ArtistaNET II - digital Poster controller: The ArtistaNET III digital Picture Player (for local slide shows with internet-update function).

The ArtistaNET III is compatible in function to the ArtistaNET II, but much more powerful as it is based on a RISC CPU (1.2 GHz). Nevertheless this RISC CPU is very energy efficient. Despite the high performance the power consumption is only 3-4 W!

Features of ArtistaNET III - digitale Picture Player:

- 1GHz Ethernet Interface

- 512MB on-board for local storage of slide shows

- unlimited extension of memory by additional SD-Card connector

- slide shows in native resolution (no scaling = perfect picture quality)

- Project-based functionalities possible (e.g. user defined fading, audio via USB etc.)

Of course you can also use the ArtistaNET III in combination with our full range of innovative software tools: WIN resp. C#/COM Object- and Linux SDK, drivers, ArtistaDisplayPrinter, ArtistaControlCenter.

Timing: samples already in lab test, ß-sample for customers around late April 2010, series from September 2010 on.

Windows 7 for our Artista-platforms

Since October 2009 Microsoft has been marketing Windows 7 as the successor product for the relatively unpopular popular SW-platform Vista.  The majority of our customers didn’t like the unstable and memory consuming Vista. They preferred to stay with the very stable Windows XP(e).  This has changed with Windows 7. Especially the introduction of WDMM V1.1 (Windows Display Driver Model) with the transfer of CPU intensive math processes from Kernel-Mode towards User-Mode should enable a much higher stability resp. a significant reduction of "Blue-screen" - events. According to Microsoft the stability of the WDMM will be better than the XP-predecessor XDDM.

Our R&D team has been working hard since the summer of 2009 to present the Windows 7 adaption for all of our SW-tools (extended desktop, driver, SDK, user software ACC & ADP) for use with the Artista-hardware platforms. The WDMM is causing a total new structure of the Artista Desktop Driver Module.

The strategic approach has been the use of the official WDDM API for the independence of the Microsoft Service Packs and other existing graphics drivers offered by 3rd party SW companies. Therefore the flexible and modular driver concept of the Artista series is alive. Based on this SW concept we can create unique customized driver developments for your industrial applications: fast, industrial proven and cost efficient.

The ß-Version of the Artista Desktop Driver is already available and was already supplied to selected customers. The touch-screen support should be ready in the second half of March. The complete implementation with downloadable installation should be ready around QII 2010. We can already start with project-oriented customized adaptations. Please contact our sales team for more information.

RSS-Newsfeed for ArtistaMEDIA

With our Network-Mediaplayer ArtistaMEDIA it is now possible to perform RSS-Newsfeeds!

The video-content is downloaded e.g. from a FTP-Server via pull-technology by the ArtistaMEDIA. To improve the up-to-dateness of the content we developed a new software service: RSS Newsfeed as a defined part of the playlist.

These newsfeeds are automatically implemented into the playlist within the layout, which is defined by you. You just need to define the colour and layout of the text as well as the topics (e.g. politics, economy, sports etc.). Everything else is generated by our Newsfeed-algorithm.

Are you interested to improve your content? Then please ask your sales partner for our service package.

Remote control/diagnostic: latest status

With the ARCB Artista Remote Control Board we have been developing a sophisticated solution over the last 2 years for applications where a remote control/diagnostic of TFT-monitors with unique functionalities is needed.

All currents and signals between the display controller (e.g. supplied by an IPC or a VGA/DVI converter board) and the TFT itself are transferred via the ARCB-board and permanently monitored. If there is any miss-match between a defined range of panel currents and -signals, the ARCB board immediately sends a failure message via Ethernet/Internet or RS-485 to a control room. Depending on project-oriented functionalities the display unit can be switched-off/on with a firmware-defined algorithm. Besides the alarm-functionality all operational values can be permanently recorded.

Other standard functionalities are an operating hours counter, an integrated brightness regulation via a digital ambient light sensor and a temperature controlled fan management.

NEW (option):  Sensors for shock resp. vibrations (vandalism protection), humidity and proximity.

For the ARCB we developed the handling & analysis open source software ARCS, which can be downloaded from our website. This software enables the configuration of the boards via web-browser and the download of the currently measured values via the serial interface. The information is generated as an XML-file.

Zytronic Multitouch from end of Q2/2010 on

The Projected Capacitive Touchscreens from ZYTRONIC will also be available as multi-touchscreens at approx. the end of Q II / 2010.

Projected capacitive touchscreens are perfectly designed for ruggedized and vandalism-protected applications in public as well as industrial areas. A significant advantage of this technology is that the surface is very resistant against all industrial detergents and solvents, dirt or grease. This is possible due to no coatings on the front side, and the sensor-medium being inside the glass. Hence these touchscreens can be also used with gloves.

All standard sizes between 5.7” and 82” are available. A project-oriented focus will allow you to order every custom size.

Zytronic will introduce a brand new touch controller with a new processor architecture in late Q II.  This new controller is designed to support multitouch functionalities (dual-touch) and gesturing under Windows 7.

An interesting additional new feature will be the free customization. You are free to define active and inactive touch areas.

Customer application: Splitwall with 46“ SuperNarrowBezel-TFT

As always we would like to introduce an interesting customer application to you (here realized by our US team).

The US space agency NASA requested to equip their major conferencing area for customer presentations with a large TFT-videowall. The following requests had to be fulfilled:

·         diagonal size of 5 - 6 m for a perfect presentation for everybody, even in the backmost seats

·         a mechanical gap between the single TFTs as small as possible to have no loss of content

There was only one choice:  the LTI460AA04. The Samsung LTI460AA04 is a 46" TFT-panel (HD resolution 1366x768), which is especially designed for seamless split-/videowalls. A bezel-width of only 3.5mm per display is a world record!

The LTI460AA04 has a superior optical performance with a brightness value of 700 cd/m², a contrast ratio of 3000:1 as well as a perfect viewing angle of 178° making NASA’s decision easy.

It would be a pleasure for us to advise you on your project! Questions? Then please contact  us.
